Celebrating Thanksgiving After a Split

If you recently got a divorce, you are probably not looking forward to Thanksgiving this year. In the past, you likely sat at the dinner table with your spouse, children, and other members of the family, regaling each other with some of your fondest memories. Now that you are no longer together, the landscape of your dining room table will look drastically different. We have some tips to help you deal with this festive time of year.

Remembering to Stay Thankful

Going through a divorce is not an easy experience and you might have a hard time remembering what you are thankful for now that it is over. Examine your life and look at what you have. Chances are, there are at least a few things for which you can feel gratitude, whether it be your children, close friends, or your health. Make a list for yourself and embrace the spirit of this holiday by giving thanks.

It is also crucial not to dwell on the past. Your marriage is over and now is the time to create new traditions that fit into your new life. If the kids are not spending Thanksgiving with you this year, celebrate it on another day with them and invite a few other friends or family members over. It can become a new tradition for your family during the years when your kids spend Thanksgiving Day with your former spouse.

Here are some additional tips for you to keep in mind this Thanksgiving:

  • Reach out to your friends and family for support. Just because you might not have your kids surrounding you at the dinner table this year does not mean you need to spend it alone. It will be easier to overcome your feelings of melancholy and heartache when you are surrounded by people who care for you.
  • Be flexible, if possible. Remember, your co-parent is new at this too, so if you need to make a minor change to the holiday visitation schedule and it does not conflict with your plans, show a little goodwill. It will likely be returned in the future.
  • Do something nice for yourself. You are mourning the end of your marriage, so you are undoubtedly a little tender right now. Being kind to yourself is one of the best steps you can take to lift your spirits and thrive now and for the rest of the holiday season. If you love going to
